What are the best gadgets for 2012?
2012 has the potential to be one of the most innovative years; with new gadgets hitting our shelves every day the technology world is gearing up their efforts to bring out the next big thing, with companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft and many others trying to gain a large share of the pie.
The innovation is coming in several areas ranging from powerful tablets, super phones and perhaps most interestingly gadgets that give you more control over your home. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Apple and Google are competing for control of your living room and creating multi-media gadgets than do more than simply play games or movies.
It's truly a great time to be a geek. Here are some of the best gadgets for 2012. These may also be the top gadgets for Christmas 2012:
Top Tablets for 2012
Lenovo Yoga - With Microsoft bringing out their tablet oriented Windows 8 in fall 2012 manufacturers are scrambling to produce laptops and tablets with touchscreen interfaces that can take advantage of the innovation that Windows 8 represents. The Lenova Yoga is a cross between an ultrabook and a tablet, with a 13-inch screen and a multitouch capacitive touch screen. It truly looks like a crossover that takes the tablet to the next level.
iPad with Retina display I have to say that I often struggle with smart phones or smaller tablet as the screens are very difficult to read sometimes. However, with the modern technology Apple are beginning to make their iPad with a stunning Retina Display.
This new innovation really makes a huge difference. Web pages and apps are crisper and look stunning. This of course isnt the only reason to get the iPad. It simply is the most rounded tablet available so far. It is the most powerful feature packed tablet on the market, and like everything Apple does, reeks quality. While Google and Microsoft are entering the market, Apple is still streets ahead.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 while the iPad is the best, some people simply dont need the power of the iPad, or the screen size. With the ability to use Android, and some cool apps that allow you to control multi-media devices, the Galaxy Tab 2 is a worthy little gadget that is powerful and feature packed. You really cannot go wrong for $250.
Microsoft Surface tablet with a new operating system aimed at the tablet market, Microsoft have decided that only they can produce a tablet that takes full advantage of their innovation. For once Microsoft have taken the game to Apple and designed a product that not only challenges the iPads dominance, but also takes a stab at the amazing Macbook Air.
With an ARM and an Intel model Microsoft have stunned the market especially as it looks like the product may (for once) live up to the hype. As a combination between an Ultrabook and a Tablet, with a detachable keyboard, this tablet looks like it could challenge the iPad. Of course, so far we have only seen proto-types while it looks very powerful with excellent specs, and the screen looks great, it remains to be seen if it truly delivers and for once allows the market to have a real piece of technology that could challenge Apples dominance.
Google Nexus 7 not to be outdone by Apple or Microsoft, Google are building on their growing Android system and creating their own tablet. While not particularly innovative, this tablet is definitely one to look at as a great alternative to the Kindle Fire or Barnes and Noble Nook. The device is essentially an extension to the current smartphones available.
Top Consoles for 2012
The console market is in constant fluctuation. Once again were seeing the console transform into something more than a games machine, and with the innovations from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, the way we control our home is changing.
PlayStation Vita this is an amazing hand held console that shows the direction that games and media are going. Not only does it have a stunning variety of games, far more than you can get on any smart phone, but the way in which you can control the games is vastly superior. You have the traditional analog stick and buttons, the touchscreen and the touch pad.
With the ability to interact with the PS3, this little device is likely to become far more than a simple hand held console.
The Nintendo Wii U this innovative console will be on the shelves in time for Christmas. With a new gampad the Wii U introduces a second screen into the traditional console. It allows interaction between the main Wii U console and the gadget and provides the next level of gaming weve all been looking for.
The gadget can be used to view maps, inventories etc., or can stream the whole game and become a hand held console. Not only that, as a second screen it can work in parallel with the Wii U and provide additional functionality to games.
Nintendo are keeping the specs close to their chest though, but its likely to be a high powered machine that should compete well with the next generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony. You can therefore expect HD graphics, Blu Ray DVD and a whole host of new features.
Perhaps the biggest change is that it is rumored that the WII U will also be more like a multimedia device that will allow you to control all aspects of the living room media experience.
Microsoft Glass in a surprising move, Microsoft introduced their own gadget that can interact with the XBOX as well as most multimedia devices in the home. The difference is that Microsoft are not creating a new gadget but instead are creating an App that can be used on existing smartphones and tablets.
The functionality seems similar to the Wii U and allows a user to interact with a game or even interact more with a TV show by finding out information about characters etc. Microsoft are continuing to expand on the multi-media experience, shaping the XBOX as a multi-media living room device rather than a gaming machine.

Vizio Ultrabooks its taken a while but PC manufacturers are finally taking note of Apple and producing Ultrabooks that simply emulate everything that makes the MacBook Air so good. Apple iPod touch 8GB MP3 Player - Apple continue to produce the most intuitive mp3 player, and while it can be argued they are not the best mp3 players, they certainly are the most popular and definitely are the best quality gadgets.
With the addition of Apps the device becomes even more useful as it becomes a smart phone without the phone this allows the user to use streaming music websites and subscription websites.
SanDisk - Sansa Fuze+ 8GB MP3 Player - Sandisk continue to produce quality mp3 players that produce excellent sound and are very reasonably priced. Learning from Apple they have become far more intuitive to use and give the user a lot of options for using subscription services such as Rhapsody.
Zune HD 32 GB Video MP3 Player Im actually surprised that the Zune didnt become a major competitor to the iPod. It is an excellent multi-media gadget that has a great screen, excellent sound and also has its own music service. Microsoft did a great job of building this device, but a poor job of marketing.
Top Phones for 2012
Samsung Exhilarate - With the ever increasing cost of smart phones its interesting to see Samsung bring out a reasonably priced phone that has a 4 Super Amoled display, front and rear cameras and the ability to stream live TV. At $50 its an amazing piece of technology that is made from 80% recycled material and is energy efficient.
Nokia Lumia 900 Nokia took a gamble by embracing the Windows Phone platform last year and were finally seeing the results of this gamble. This phone with a 4.3 inch screen is perhaps their best yet its sleek, has a great set of cameras and is slowly beginning to show the world the advantages of the Windows Phone OS.
The iPhone 4S -Apple were the first to make a decent smart phone and they continue to be the best. The iPhone 4S is a sleek and sexy beast that boasts 600,000 apps, has a gorgeous display and is built from the best technology.
And of course Apple are constantly innovating and producing updates that always seem to be a step ahead of their competition.
The Galaxy S III perhaps the only phone that even comes close to the iPhone is the Galaxy S III. Taking a leaf out of Apples book, the Galaxy S III is built using the best hardware and has a gorgeous screen that compares favorably with the iPhone. The screen is larger than most but perhaps the biggest plus for the Galaxy S III is the ability to run Android smoothly thus giving the iPhone a run for its money.
Android continues to grow but developers are still concentrating on the Apple App store, however if the balance begins to tip towards the Android OS then youre likely to see the Galaxy S III move above the iPhone as the best smart phone.
