Sudoku Techniques including X Wing and Swordfish

From easy to advanced Sudoku puzzles they all require the application of logical deductions and eliminations to solve them. And as such they are not only highly satisfying once completed, but also a great way to practise your logic skills whilst still being fun, and in fact once you get to grips with the Sudoku rules you may find that these puzzles can be very addictive!
Ranging from easy, medium, hard to difficult puzzles, you can find Sudoku for all ages and levels of expertise online, in books, in newspapers and now you can get Android and iPhone apps so you can play Sudoku on your smart phones well.

Advanced Sudoku Strategy Tips - X-wing Technique

The X-wing strategy makes use of the fact that in certain scenarios there can only be 2 possible rows that you can place a number and these positions are also in the same column. As a result these 4 squares which form a rectangle, i.e. diagonally opposite squares (see diagram 1) or an X shape, hence the name of this technique.

The scenario described above covers column and row variations of the X Wing Sudoku technique, depending on whether you are using the rows or columns to identify the X-wing and eliminate candidates from the columns or rows.

Swordfish Suokdu Row Variation

Advanced Sudoku: the Swordfish Technique

The Swordfish method is one of the most complex Sudoku strategies that youll find in newspaper Sudoku puzzles. Effectively, the Swordfish technique is similar to the X wing method. But instead of 2 rows and columns the Swordfish uses 3. The Swordfish method is used if for 3 rows or columns, there are only 2 or 3 possible places that a number can be put in. And for all three rows/columns these squares occur in the same 3 columns/rows (see diagram 2).

The scenario described above covers row and column variations of the Swordfish Sudoku technique, depending on whether you are using the rows or columns to identify the Swordfish formation and eliminate candidates from the columns or rows.

Other Sudoku Strategies - Very Advanced

Sudoku Jellyfish Technique: is similar to the X-wing strategy but using 4 rows and columns instead of using the X-wing technique of 2 rows/columns.
Sudoku XY Wing: an advanced technique and a continuation of the previous techniques.
Sudoku XYZ Wing: The XYZ wing is an expansion of the XY wing strategy just using slightly different layout.
Sudoku WXYZ Wing: Again extending from the previous technique, the WXYZ-Wing is the next step on from the XYZ-Wing.
Linked pairs, which are also known as remote pairs.
Colouring including simple and advanced coloring: uses a variant to solve complex Sudoku puzzles.
Nishio: when all else fails try using the guessing and the backtracking method.
