Introduction

Android OS has had a "notification bar" since the very beginning, where you are notified by the system of various things that had happened, such as status updates. In general you swipe down from the top to bring down the notification area.

Due to the open nature of the Android OS, you can customize how the notifications will be shown, from the simple base style to emulations of other Mobile OS such as iOS, Windows Phone 7, and so on, to outlandish fullscreen animations and more.

So if you are tired of your default notification style, you can download one of these apps and customize it, and truly make the phone your own.

Droid Notify (lite)

Droid Notify turns the notification message into a pop-up, but not all of them, just the important stuff, like SMS, missed call, and so on. (Pro version adds Google Voice, Facebook, and Twitter notifications).

The best part about Droid Notify is its language support, and its theme packs. You can download additional theme packs if you don't like how the pop-up looks.

Keep in mind that some SMS apps, such as Handcent, has its own pop-up and you may need to disable that else you'll get double the pop-ups.

The limited app support is somewhat troubling, but then you don't want to see EVERY notification as a pop-up. Try the lite version and see how you like it, upgrade to pro later.

This family of apps all came from the same folks at ProductIGeeky, and they essentially work the same way, except in different styles.

You install these, turn them on, (only one at a time please), then choose which apps you want to see notifications from, and that's it!

Popup Notifier Lite has a middle of the screen pop-up similar in style of Droid Notify. If you register you get a couple extra "themes" that matches better with your overall desktop theme.

iPhone Notification Lite has the iPhone rounded-corner style pop-up style. Works great if you want to use it with something like Espier Launcher, which is like an exact clone of iOS launcher.

WP7 Notification Lite has a "banner" style notification on top of the screen borrowed from Windows Phone 7's "Metro" interface. Works great with one of the Windows Phone 7 style launchers in the launcher round-up.

NotifierPro has a similar style to WP7 notification, but has theme packs to allow further customization of the banners, icons, colors, and so on.

Awesome! Notifier

Awesome! Notifier aims to be really awesome. It makes notifications full-screen popups, with customizable background, fonts, animations, and so on and so forth. Obviously you don't want this for everything, so right now it's just SMS, Gmail, Twitter, and Facebook.

You can even set different avatars for specific contacts. Need more avatars? Download avatar pack, and/or Import them from other apps such as Androidify.

Pops - Notification Themes

If you think all of these notifications are just pretty lame, and you want some serious full screen animations, like mini movies, for a notification, then Pops is for you.

Pops install about the same way as any other notification modder... it needs to go through the accessibility setup. Once you got that, you download one of the theme packs, and there are dozens and dozens of different stuff, drawings, photos, of almost ANY theme (albeit, they can't violate copyright, so no copyrighted characters or such).

If you want notification that makes people go "wow", you should try Pops.
