If you owned Nexus S then you are one of the Android users who enjoyed the priveledges of having an up to date Android smartphone. As we all know android platform is an open source therefore lot of possibilities awaits on your phone, one example of this is "unlocking" the Nexus S bootloader.
REMEMBER: Please read carefully before you proceed. If youre not sure what you're going to do STOP. I am not responsible if you turn your Nexus S into BRICK.
First you have to download install at least 3 things:
A. Java SE SDK - Its a prerequisite for the Android SDK so install this first.
B.The Android SDK - after unzipping the content and open SDK manager,check for updates and install everything. Pls note that there is two Tools directories inside the .zip, one in the main folder and one inside Platform. "adb" is in the main Tools directory, and fastboot is in Platform/tools/
C. PDANet installer - If you fastboot the phone, these drivers are needed amd will help you in flashing. After this you may able to use USB tethering to give your PC net access through your phone
After you have everything unzipped, you have to enable USB debugging services on your phone just Go into Settings > Applications > Development, and tap USB Debugging to turn it on.
Reminder: At this point ensure that the PDANet drivers is installed already, No need to run the application (it conflicts with adb) just install it. if not you may encounter warnings about unverified drivers.
Installed the Google USB Driver Package from inside the Android SDK application to be able to plug the Nexus S into your desktop. computer tips no need to enable USB storage on the phone then Right click on My Computer select Manage then Device Manager check Other Devices section you will see Nexus S with tiny yellow exclaimation point. meaning you have to update the drivers by Right click on it, and select Update Drivers, pointing to where you installed the USB drivers.
Next you'll need to go into a command prompt at the start button of search field type cmd and press enter This will put you in C:\users\yourusername in Windows
If you unzipped the Android SDK into C:\android, for example, now type cd ../.. to put yourself into the C: base folder, and then type cd android to put yourself into the SDK folder. If you unzipped it/named it something else, just substitute it for the above.Type adb devices (no quotes) at the prompt and you should be greeted with a serial number. If you dont see that, youve missed a step somewhere.
You can type now into the command prompt window adb reboot bootloader press Enter, your phone will then reset into fastboot mode. The drivers will install automatically from your PDANet installation. If it prompts waiting for device Check the PDANet drivers it may not installed successfully.
Now type into the command prompt fastboot oem unlock (no quotes) and press return. Make sure to copy the contents of platform/tools into tools in the main folder, if not "command not found" message will shown up, if you copy your phone will warn you about unlocking and voiding warranties. Hit Yes on your phone then command prompt will response OK and you will see how many seconds it took you to decide to void your warranty. Thats it. You have now the unlocked version of Nexus S!
Once you done rebooting from there You will see a new icon on your bootscreen and at the bottom screen theres a gray padlock in the unlocked position, here you can install Clockwork Recovery Mod and you may continue to root your phone if you decide to change ROM's such as Cyanogen, which i think theres an ongoing alpha stage for the Nexus S. There you have it enjoy!
